What To Expect
Our Process
Complete Walk-Through
― Upon arrival, we will do a walk-through to double check access points, potential obstacles and/or other logistics.
We may also prepare the site by removing a gate, setting up ramps and/or safety barriers. Once we have ensured safety and accessibility, we will bring our equipment on to the site and commence.
Specialized Machines
― Our specialized machines will grind out the stump and root flair without the need for heavy equipment.
There is no need to invasively dig into your lawn through deep excavation, we get it done clean and efficiently. We use a custom approach to each and every job, ensuring we use the right grinder. We have a total of seven machines to choose from, all for a different purpose.
Stump Removed Entirely
― We use specialized equipment which grinds down the entire tree into nothing, but this equipment is noisy.
And also potentially dangerous. The stump area should be considered off-limits during removal for the safety of everyone. We wear vision and hearing protection and protective clothing and have decades of experience to ensure your stump is safely removed.
Job Site Cleaned up
― The length of time it takes to remove a stump is based on a variety of different factors.
Our method of removal ensures that there is nothing left of the stump, so no chance of returning shoots sprouting again. After full removal, our team will fill the stump hole with ground mulch and dirt, ensuring a smooth ground level settlement over the next few weeks. Additional mulch can be used to fertilize the lawn as an additional benefit.

Ease of Access
― How easily our team and our equipment can access the stump and the overall job site.
Diameter of Stump
― The overall size of the stump will determine which equipment we need to tackle the job.
Depth Required
― Standard depth is adequate for most jobs, but sometimes you need to dig deeper.
Other Factors
― Additional obstacles, irrigation piping, and other factors may increase cost of removal.

The process we use to remove stumps is to grind out the stump and root flairs. Not only does this remove the stump, but it eliminates the possibility of new shoots sprouting again. Our specialized machines do this without the need for heavy equipment that will invasively dig into your lawn through deep excavation.
Our machines can be noisy, reflective of the performance power. The work area should be considered off-limits as we are operating dangerous equipment that can produce large shards of fast flying debris. We wear vision and hearing protection that may inhibit us from seeing or hearing anything other than the job we are focused on, so we prefer to limit potential distractions in or around the work zone.
The length of time the grinding takes varies, depending on: the machine required for your custom job, wood species and level of decay, size of stump and root flairs, accessibility, any elevation changes, requested depth, and the risk factors that we are carefully mitigating. Once the stump removal is complete and the machine is turned off, we will begin our clean-up.
Grinding will leave behind a combination of woodchips (mulch) and dirt. This will be raked into the hole created, which is generally left mounded up. This is because within a few rain storms, the chips will settle back down to ground level. Not doing so may leave a sunken area in your lawn. Larger stumps will produce more mulch than can be placed into the hole. In these cases, it can be used as rich garden mulch or be bagged and removed at an additional cost. We will then blow and/or sweep any stray debris off of walkway areas.
There can be surprises that are difficult to predict, such as lighting or irrigation systems hidden beneath a tree or garden. It is beneficial to know in advance what the suspected route of the lines are. Even with best efforts to avoid the lines, they may get cut in the process of grinding and will be the owner’s responsibility to remedy. This is rare, but it can happen, especially as growing roots can relocate lines from their original placement.
No grinder is one-size-fits all. With each job as unique as our customers, we customize a plan to fit the specific removal need based on the capacity of our machines. We have 7 machines to choose from, each with a different operational function (manual, automatic, remote), level of power, width accessibility, and depth capacity. We can access tight spaces such as raised planters, sloping gardens, townhome backyards, narrow pathways, along fence lines and decks, up and down steps, and even rooftop gardens.
We take our machines seriously and maintain (and sometimes modify) the machines for optimum usage and results. Two have been specially imported from overseas; we are unaware of anyone else in Canada who has them. This offers customers not only excellent results, but we can tackle the job in a timely manner, putting the ‘fast’ in Steadfast.
Along with our grinders, we carry a jack hammer, concrete cutter, blower, cable repair kit, and chainsaws that range from 18” to 48” in bar length, as well as replacement grinder teeth for any on-the-spot changes we want to make.
While we try to use a general formula for removals, in reality, there are numerous variables that we also consider when pricing:
- Grinder Needed: We do charge more for those tricky jobs that require use of our portable machines and our specialized skill set. These jobs are done manually, are more labour intensive, will take longer to complete, and are in need of a machine that few (if any) services can offer.
- Size: Measured in diameter across the widest part of the stump, including root flairs.
- Location: We service the Greater Toronto Area. An additional fuel surcharge may need to be added when we travel beyond.
- Accessibility: The location of the stump on the property and the accessibility to reach it, as well as any risks we may need to navigate.
- Mulch: Mulch will be placed back into the hole created. Only if additional mulch needs to be transferred or removed will there be a service fee.
- Scope Creep: Sometimes when we arrive, customers ask for more work to be done than was included in the original estimate. Within reason, we will accommodate for an appropriate fee increase.
We currently accept cash, cheque or contactless e-transfer. Estimates do not include HST.
